		<description>Gershom,

Do you really believe the city can be divided politically and that this won&#039;t INEVITABLY lead to the renewal of the barbed wire, minefields, anti-sniper walls and gunmen taking over the Arab areas bordering Jewish areas and firing into them, considering the legacy of hatred the Arabs have for Israel?

Here is a link to an article about the situation in Gaza one year after the HAMAS takeover:

http://www.nytimes.com/2008/06/15/world/middleeast/15gaza.html?ref=world

Note a couple of important points:
(1) Impoverishment of the population serves the interests of the ruling power....it makes the population totally dependent on them for handouts in order to allow them to survive, and
(2) The FATAH people correctly note that there is no difference between the supposed &quot;peace&quot; that Abbas claims he is negotiating with Olmert, and HAMAS offer of a partial, temporary cease-fire in return for a total withdrawal of Israel to the pre-67 lines. If this is the &quot;peace&quot; that the Palestinians are offering in return for redividing Jerusalem, it strikes me a extremely naive to think that the Arabs would allow the city to function in an open manner, without the barbed wire and minefields.</description>
